The church of Chikharula village is a St. George basilica, an elongated church without a dome; in Javakheti this austere type is especially frequent.
Chikharula stands on the grassy plateaus of the north of Akhalkalaki municipality. A kilometre and a half away, in neighbouring Balanta, rises a second St. George basilica: two kindred shrines stand almost within sight of each other.
The shrine can be approached at any time; follow the coordinates. Treat the old walls with care as you look around.
