The church of St Mary serves Balanta village in the north of Akhalkalaki Municipality. Mariami is the Georgian form of the name Mary, and churches of the Mother of God are especially numerous in these parts.
The village lies on the plateau between Akhalkalaki and Aspindza, away from the main roads. Pastures surround it, and in winter the cleared road is the only way here.
It is better to arrange a visit in advance: the parish is small and the church is opened for services. Modest dress is appropriate.
