Surrounded by the picturesque landscapes of Samegrelo, on the high wing of the lower terrace of the city of Nokalakevi, stands the Nokalakevi Church of the Forty Martyrs. This historical artifact is multi-layered, reflecting different periods of its existence.
Initially in the 6th century it arose as a three-nave basilica, but over time it underwent significant changes, turning into a domed structure. In the 16th-17th centuries, the temple underwent restoration work and was decorated by Dadiani masters. Interestingly, on the eastern side of the church there is a protruding pentagonal apse, creating a unique architectural outline.
The church interior is striking in its details: the naves are separated by columns, and the dome is supported by wide arches, creating internal harmony. The dome drum is decorated with four windows that let light into the temple, and the transition from the dome square to the dome circle is made using elegant sails.
Nokalakevo Church is also impressive with its appearance and complex architecture. Over time, various changes have been made, including the second floor and the vestibule, which makes this place even more unique and attractive to explore.
