The church of the Archangels stands in the Svan village of Mazeri. It also carries a second, local name, Guli, though what it means is not explained here.
Mazeri lies in the Becho gorge right under Ushba, and the trail to the Shdugra waterfall passes by the village, one of the most walked routes of Upper Svaneti. It is about eight kilometres from here to Mestia with its towers and churches.
This is mountain country: the weather changes fast and the trails turn soft after rain, so sturdy footwear is needed and a morning start is wiser. In the church, as in other Svan churches, people keep quiet, cover shoulders and knees, and leave the candles and the furnishings untouched.
