The church ruins lie about a kilometre from Zemo Akhalsopeli. There is no roof, the walls survive in parts, and in the village itself stand the ruins of another church dedicated to the Archangels.
The name of the village translates as upper new village, and such names are common in Georgia for settlements that arose when an older one moved or split. The area lies in the northern part of Kvemo Kartli, at the transition to the mountains. The roads are unpaved and settlement is sparse.
Keep a restrained manner: for nearby villages this is a place of memory. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Come in the morning while the light is soft.
- Check the forecast, as rain makes the approach slippery.
- Watch your step in tall grass.
Getting there
- The last stretch runs along a dirt road that softens after rain.
- Plan the visit together with nearby stops, as there is no dedicated transport here.
