A church of Saint Elias in Ganakhleba. In folk tradition the prophet Elias is linked with thunder and rain, and his day, Iliaoba, is kept in many villages by the whole neighbourhood and counted as the turn of summer.
This is another shrine of the village. The first, the church of Saint Demetre at Velispiri, stands about a kilometre away. Further north begins Sarkineti with its three churches, the nearest some two kilometres off.
Ganakhleba and Sarkineti are conveniently seen on one trip: five shrines along a short stretch of road. The rules are those of any working church: covered shoulders and knees, quiet, and a headscarf for women.
