The church dedicated to John the Baptist is part of the Egrisi complex near Gomareti, known by the name Shavsakdrebi. The name translates as the black sakdari and refers to the colour of the stone the buildings are made of.
The complex brings together several churches on a small plot: a Marian church and another, ruined one stand nearby. Gomareti belongs to Dmanisi Municipality, to its mountainous northern part where Georgian villages with Orthodox parishes survive. The altitude here is noticeable and the winter is long.
A headscarf is useful for women, as it may be required at the entrance. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Allow no more than half an hour for the visit.
- Bring water, as there are no kiosks nearby.
- Keep some cash for a donation, as there is no card terminal.
Getting there
- Navigate by the coordinates, as there may be no signs on the approach.
- Ask locals for directions, since the short way is not always obvious.
