The church in Sakire has acquired a folk name, the Red Church. In Georgia such nicknames usually come from the colour of the masonry, but that can only be checked on the spot: no official explanation of the name exists.
Sakire lies south east of Dmanisi, on the road running deeper into the Dmanisi lands. Another church of the village, of Saint George, stands about a kilometre away, so both fit into a single stop.
Of all the churches in this area the Red Church is the most conspicuous and the most often open, yet it is still worth checking access before setting out. Inside keep to the usual rules: covered shoulders and knees, quiet.
