The chapel is dedicated to the prophet Elijah. In the mountain villages of Georgia he is held in special regard: Elijah is seen as the master of thunder and rain, and chapels of his name were often built in open places with a clear view of the sky.
It stands in Sabechisi with very close neighbours: the ruins of the church of the apostles Peter and Paul are only a hundred metres away, the chapel of St Nicholas two hundred, and the ruins of the St George church a little farther.
On the spot it is worth keeping in mind that all five local shrines look alike and are easily confused: they are told apart by their dedications. There are no regular services and people come and go freely.
