The church is dedicated to the Ascension. In the Georgian tradition this is one of the oldest dedications, and in village parishes it is often confused with the Trinity, though the feasts are different.
Kumisi lies in Gardabani Municipality, south-east of Tbilisi, by the salt lake of Kumisi. The place is known for flocks of birds on the water, the village stretches along the shore, and the church stands in its inhabited part.
The church holds no regular services, and visits are arranged on the spot. The parish is alive, and on the patronal feast it gets crowded here.
