The church of the Virgin stands in the upper part of Shashiani and completes the round of church buildings in the village: three here.
The other two are the church of Saint Barbara, which also carries a second name referring to a neighbouring locality, and the Kvelatsminda church dedicated to All Saints. Shashiani lies north of Vachnadziani, away from the main highway: a road leaves it across the fields. Vineyards of the Alazani valley stretch around.
The grounds are open around the clock, meaning free access to the churchyard. All three sites can be walked in about an hour. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women.
