Like the neighbouring complex four hundred metres away, this site is disused: monastic life ceased here long ago, no services are held, and the place exists as a monument. Together the two groups of caves make up the Sabereebi cluster, whose name reads as the place of monks.
The complex belongs to the Gareja range, the semi-desert ridge on the Azerbaijani border where the famous Davit Gareja also stands, but these are different sites. Open steppe surrounds it: no trees, no water and no settlements for many kilometres, with a level horizon all the way to the border.
The road is unpaved and becomes impassable in rain, and this is a border area, so watch the signs carefully. Drive in dry weather, not alone, and carry water. Treat the caves with care.
