Sabereebi, meaning the place where monks are, lies on the Gareji ridge and consists of churches and cells cut into the rock. This point stands apart from the main cluster of the complex, about half a kilometre away from it.
Sabereebi is placed in the ninth century. Inscriptions in several languages survive in one of its churches, which points to a mixed monastic community. Around it lies dry treeless hill steppe; summers are very hot and there is no water nearby.
Do not climb on the masonry, as the walls hold worse than they look. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Combine the visit with neighbouring villages to save time.
- Bring a torch if it is dark inside.
- Wear shoes with a firm sole.
Getting there
- Ask locals for directions, since the short way is not always obvious.
- The last stretch runs along a dirt road that softens after rain.
