The name translates word for word: qvavi is Georgian for a crow, and the church is known as the crow sakdari. What stands behind such a name, a locality, a local tradition or simply a feature of the place, is not explained, but the name has stuck firmly and no dedication is given for the church.
Pshaveli lies at the very gateway to the mountain part of the region: from here the road climbs up into Pshav-Khevsureti, towards the passes and the high villages. The village stands on the border of two worlds, the lowland Kakhetian and the highland one, and that shows in its way of life and its buildings.
There are no regular services at the church and it can be approached at any time. The village stretches up the slope and the climb to the upper part is noticeable. If you are planning a drive into the mountains this makes a convenient stop before the ascent: villages grow markedly sparser further along the route.
