The church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God, and locally it is called the Upper Virgin: the name refers to the position of the village, since Zemo Bodbe stands higher up the slope than Kvemo Bodbe.
A caveat about the neighbourhood is essential: the famous Bodbe monastery, the resting place of Saint Nino, lies near Sighnaghi and has no connection with this village church, although the names share a root. Down the slope, in Kvemo Bodbe, stands a church of its own, known by two names at once, Svetitskhoveli and the Twelve Apostles.
The church is open from morning to evening, so you can call in at almost any hour of the day. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women, and speak quietly on the grounds.
