Care is needed here: the place is known as the Kvari fortress and at the same time is mentioned as a church. It may be a church within a fortress or the fortress structure itself, so the scale and character of the site are best checked in advance so the trip does not diverge from expectations.
The site stands in the surroundings of Kvareli Lake, north-east of the town, by the road leading to the water. The lake itself is man made, lies at the foot of the Caucasus range and serves as a popular place of rest; nearby begin the climbs into the wooded foothills.
No regular services are held here, the grounds are open and can be approached at any time. Treat the old masonry gently and do not climb the walls. The trip combines well with a walk by the lake: the water is a few minutes away.
