The basilica is dedicated to the Virgin while the village carries the name of St. George: Giorgitsminda translates as Saint George. Such a divergence usually means that the name of the hamlet is older than the present church and goes back to an earlier one.
Giorgitsminda lies two kilometres from Sagarejo, on the Kakheti plain by the Gombori range. The nameless church of the same village stands about seven hundred metres away, the ruins of the church of St. Marine in Sagarejo two and a half kilometres, the church of Sts Peter and Paul three.
The road from Sagarejo is short and passable all year. The parish is a village one, services are not held every day, yet the church can always be approached. Dress modestly, a headscarf for women, quiet inside. The two village shrines stand close and can be walked between in half an hour.
