The Forty Martyrs of Sebaste were early Christian soldiers who, by tradition, died for their faith in the Armenian city of Sebaste. Their memory is kept in March in the Orthodox tradition, and churches of their name are found across the Christian East.
Vazisubani lies north-east of Gurjaani in the Alazani valley. The village name translates literally as the vine quarter, which is the best explanation of why it is worth coming here in autumn. The village holds several Christian buildings: the churches of St. Mary and of John the Baptist stand nearby.
Of all the churches in the village this one keeps the most predictable schedule: the doors are open during daytime hours. For a route through the wine villages of the Gurjaani district it makes a convenient anchor.
