The church of Saint George with the qualifier Armationi stands in Zemo Machkhaani. The added word works as a distinguishing mark: several churches of Saint George stand in the area and are easily confused without it.
The prefix zemo means upper: Kvemo Machkhaani lies further down the slope with its Trinity church, and the pair of villages shares one name across two levels. Zemo Machkhaani also holds a second sanctuary, a church of the Virgin a couple of hundred metres away. The village lies south-east of Sighnaghi, the hilltop town overlooking the Alazani valley, which is not far from here.
The church is well kept and open from morning to evening, unusual for a village church and a sign of steady care. Come with shoulders and knees covered; a headscarf is useful for women.
