The church of the Ascension stands in Chognari, east of Kutaisi. The parish here is a living one, the church is well kept, and in the district it is better known than its neighbour, the gate church.
That neighbour, the Mother of God church of the Eklari complex, is a kilometre and a half from here. The two shrines of the village are built differently: one stands at the gates of a complex, the other on its own in the inhabited part.
On the spot it is worth remembering that the order in a village parish is settled by arrangement. The usual etiquette applies: covered shoulders and knees, quiet inside.
