The church of the Mother of God is set over the gates of the Eklari complex. Such buildings are called gate churches: they stand not apart but at the entrance, serving at once as a church and as part of the enclosure.
The complex lies near Chognari, east of Kutaisi. What else belongs to it is not listed in the district, while the second Chognari shrine, the church of the Ascension, stands a kilometre and a half away.
There are no regular services, and visits are arranged on the spot. If you step inside, remember that a gate church is usually cramped and awkward for a large group.
