David the Builder, Davit Aghmashenebeli in Georgian, was the twelfth-century king under whom Georgia reached its greatest power, and one of the most venerated saints of the country.
The monastery of his name in Ninoshvili is the only one with this dedication in the Gurian part of this survey. No dating has become attached to it, and that is worth bearing in mind: veneration of David the Builder as a heavenly patron spread widely over the last decades, so a recent foundation is more likely than an ancient one.
The monastery is active, so a visit follows a monastic order of the day rather than a tourist one. Modest dress is required, a headscarf for women. The first half of the day is the better time to come, and voices are kept low.
