Guria opens with an almost comic detail: the village is called Amaghleba, the Ascension, and the church in it carries the same name. Such a coincidence is not rare in Georgia: first a church was built, then a settlement grew around it and took its name.
Guria is the smallest region of Georgia by area: green, humid, with tea plantations and tangerine orchards. Church density here is more modest than in Kakheti, but the road between the villages is more scenic: hills, streams, wooden houses on stilts.
You can walk up to the church at any time of day, which suits a traveller without a strict schedule. No dating has become attached to the building. Dress soberly, women bring a headscarf.
