Kutaisi in Photos

Kutaisi is one of the oldest cities in Georgia. It is linked to Aia, the capital of Colchis in the myth of the Argonauts, and in the 11th century it was the capital of the united Kingdom of Georgia. Bagrati Cathedral stands above the city on Ukimerioni hill: it was built under King Bagrat III, destroyed at the end of the 17th century and given back its dome only in 2012. Below it the fast Rioni divides the city in two, with old houses and wooden balconies hanging over the water. By the synagogue a bronze Boris Gaponov sits on a bench, the man who translated The Knight in the Panther's Skin into Hebrew. The gallery shows Bagrati Cathedral, the banks of the Rioni and the old town.
