Wooden Mosques

Muslim Georgians live in the mountain villages of Adjara, and many villages have a mosque of their own. The oldest are built of timber and from outside look like an ordinary two storey house: dark log walls, a stone base, a porch and narrow windows. Inside are carved doors, painted ceilings and wooden minbars, and some have a small tin minaret beside them. The gallery shows mosques in the villages of the Keda and Khulo districts, including Gulebi, Zundagi, Inasharidzeebi, Kolotauri and Zeda Bzubzu, in summer, in autumn and in deep snow. At the end come mosques clad in metal sheets and new stone mosques.
