The Varlam Simonishvili House Museum keeps the setting of a village house and the objects tied to the name of its owner. It shows furniture, photographs, documents and everyday things that reveal how a Guria family lived in the last century. Relatives or staff tell the story, so the visit turns out personal.
The house stands in Shemokmedi, a village a few kilometres from Ozurgeti, known for its monastery complex. Around it are hills, tea plantations and wooded slopes. The village also has an ethnographic collection, and the two are convenient to see together.
The house is small and half an hour is enough. A phone number is listed and the visit is worth arranging in advance. Plan the trip for the first half of the day and combine it with the monastery.
Tips
- Call ahead, village house museums keep a loose schedule
- Combine the visit with Shemokmedi monastery and the ethnographic collection
- Come in dry weather, village roads are harder after rain
