The Shemokmedi Ethnographic Museum gathers objects of village life in Guria: household utensils, tools, textiles and things kept in country houses for several generations. The collection is intimate and rests on local enthusiasts, and that is exactly what makes it interesting. It shows how a Guria village lived before the old way of life gave way to the urban one.
The museum stands in Shemokmedi, a village a few kilometres from Ozurgeti, best known for its monastery complex. Around it are hills, tea plantations and wooded slopes typical of Guria. It makes sense to see the museum and the monastery on the same trip, they are close together.
The museum is small and the first half of the day is the easier time to come. Half an hour is enough for the display. If the door is locked, ask in the village, someone nearby usually keeps the key.
Tips
- Combine the visit with Shemokmedi monastery, the main local landmark
- Come in the morning, village museums are more often closed later in the day
- Carry small notes in cash in case a donation is expected
How to get there
- About ten minutes by car from Ozurgeti along the road towards Shemokmedi
- Roughly an hour from Batumi via Kobuleti and Ozurgeti
