The Georgian-style New Year's holiday is embodied in three Gozinaki stadiums and the Olympic wine pool

Гозинак

Like any holiday in Georgia, the New Year is celebrated with all pomp, with a variety of dishes on the table. But it is worth noting that the size of this holiday is extremely gigantic. Yes, we are talking about a completely different scale here, friends. After all, how much gozinaki and wine are needed for the celebration!

Gozinaki is a dessert made of walnuts and honey. Iosif (Soso) Archvadze, an expert on economic issues, told Sputnik Georgia in an interview how huge the country's costs are for these two main New Year's "attributes". So let's start with gozinaki.

Children have been eating gozinaki since they were three years old and this is a tradition, therefore, to calculate consumption, we can assume that about 95% of the population of Georgia eats gozinaki, which is more than 3 million 400 thousand people. Usually gozinaki is cut into pieces of about 5x5 cm, and in two days, on December 31 and January 1, each person eats three pieces. Therefore, we can expect

that each family member eats 3 pieces of gozinaki.

To illustrate the number, the expert gave a clear example. The total area of gozinaki eaten by the Georgian population during these two days is equal to the area of three and a half standard football fields. It should be noted that a standard football stadium, on the recommendation of the international football organization FIFA, should have a length of 105 meters and a width of 68 meters.

We're moving on to wine. The expert also gave an analogy for clarity. Let's assume that a man drinks about 1 liter of wine, and a woman drinks 200 grams. Thus, the amount of wine consumed per family on New Year's Eve is about 2.4 liters.

To visually represent this volume, the expert cited the example of an entire Olympic swimming pool. Imagine a pool 50 meters long, 25 meters wide and 2 meters deep. It holds 2.5 million liters of water. So, the volume of wine consumed in Georgia on New Year's Eve exceeds this figure!

Of course, many Georgians drink their own wine, but if we accept the average market price of wine - 6 lari, then up to 16 million lari are spent on wine in Georgia on New Year's Eve. If we sum up the costs of gozinaki and wine, the total amount reaches 46 million lari.

Thus, the Georgian New year is not only a lot of different dishes and endless feasts, but also huge economic costs. But when it comes to such goodies as gozinaki and Georgian wine, it is worth noting that this is one of the traditions that Georgians are ready to observe and spend any money on it.
