The International Seafarer's Day is solemnly celebrated in Adjara

The events dedicated to the International Day of the Sailor began in the city of Buta, Adjara, with a solemn procession of cadets of the Naval Academy, leading along Rustaveli Street and reaching the pier. The festive event was decorated with the playing of the orchestra and the harmonious march of the students of the academy. The main part of the ceremony included taking the oath by 500 cadets.

As part of this special event, the Father Ilya Kartoz Prize was awarded to those sailors who made a significant contribution to the development of the maritime industry and showed special courage on the high seas. This award, established by the Georgian Maritime Transport Agency, is named after Archimandrite Ilya Kartoziy, who died during a fire on the Norman Atlantic ship in the Adriatic Sea. Every year the prize is awarded to sailors who have shown exceptional bravery and bravery in sea conditions.

The story of Ilya Kartoz's father remains inspiring and touching. During the fire on the ship, he noticed a woman with a small child and generously gave up his place on the rescue boat, giving it to them. He stayed on the burning ship to help other passengers.

Since 2011, Georgia, together with other maritime nations, annually celebrates the International Seafarer's Day by organizing various events. The Maritime Transport Agency plays an important role in organizing and conducting these events. This holiday reminds of the importance of maritime professions and the contribution of seafarers to the development of the maritime industry.
