Georgian singing should be listened to in Georgia
The mesmerizing polyphony of Georgian vocals is the pride of Georgia and a masterpiece of intangible heritage by UNESCO decision.
Georgians sing everywhere: at home, in church, on holidays and funerals. Traditional Georgian vocal music has different genres: melodic church music, lyrical solo songs performed while working in the field, sonorous drinking songs and romances.
The types of performance in different regions of Georgia are also different: the music of Kakheti is a polyphonic dialogue, in the western regions there is contrasting polyphony, and in mountainous Svaneti there is complex polyphony.
An example of classical Georgian singing, the song “Chakrulo” was sent into outer space as one of the visiting cards of the Earth. We have been to Georgia and have not heard the Georgians sing — we will have to come again.
