Deputy Prime Minister on the future of the HPP in Kazbegi: the decision is in the hands of the investor and the public
At the last government meeting, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Levan Davitashvili shared important information regarding the possible construction of a hydroelectric power plant in the mountainous region of Kazbegi. In response to a journalist's question, he stressed that the initiative to build the Kamara HPP depends on the decision of the investor and the support of the population.
"If the investor is confident that the new package of proposals will be acceptable to the local population and will receive their support, the construction of the hydroelectric power plant will be carried out," the Deputy Prime Minister said.
It should be recalled that the residents of Kazbegi expressed their dissatisfaction with the Kamara HPP project, expressing concerns about possible consequences for the Terek River. They oppose the return of the river to the riverbed after the construction of the hydroelectric power station. In this regard, citizens demand a meeting with representatives of the Kamara Energy construction company.
The Deputy Prime Minister noted that issues related to relations with the population are being discussed comprehensively. This includes social, compensatory and economic aspects. Currently, the realizer of the project is Kamara Energy, which has expressed interest in investing in the region in 2021. However, at that time, the Ministry of Environmental Protection expressed comments on the project, and an opinion on the copying report was not issued.
It should be noted that the scoping procedure, which determines the necessary information for strategic environmental assessment, requires careful consideration when implementing such projects.
