Fighting the crisis: Is the increase in bread prices in Georgia a myth or reality?
The range of questions about the possible rise in the price of bread in Georgia was resolved by the head of the Ministry of Agriculture Otar Shamugia, stressing that at the moment there are no grounds for concern.
The government has decided to introduce a temporary duty on wheat flour imports until March 1, 2024, designed to support Georgian farmers who are facing difficulties in selling grain crops due to lack of demand. It is important to note that this decision was made on the condition that bread prices remain stable.
Otar Shamugia stressed that there are sufficient wheat reserves in the country, and the import of flour continues, albeit in smaller volumes. The export duty on wheat from Russia also affected the difficulties in the sector. However, the minister claims that there is no reason to expect a rise in the price of bread in the near future.
The decision to impose a duty on flour imports is aimed at supporting local grain production and stimulating the activities of flour milling enterprises in Georgia. Flour mills, which are the main consumers of local wheat, produce consistent processing, which maintains the stability of bread prices.
In the context of changes in export duties and the growth of flour imports, Georgia is facing challenges in the flour milling industry sector. However, the Government is taking measures to support local farmers and ensure the sustainability of prices for basic products, such as bread, in the interests of the population.
