The name of this place is an unusual one: the outpost of a monk. What stands on the spot, a church, a cell or a wall, it does not explain, yet the word itself points to a monastic tradition rather than to a parish church.
The place lies in Napareuli, on the left bank of the Alazani at the foot of the Caucasus range. Its neighbours are close: a church of St. George about six hundred metres away, the Holy Trinity church a little over a kilometre, and the Kopala shrine near Lapankuri two kilometres off. Across the river begins Artana with churches of its own.
Do not look for a separate entrance or a fence here, the place is seen from outside. Behave as at any shrine: quietly, moving nothing and taking nothing away. In autumn, during the grape harvest, the town is crowded, and a stop here fits easily into a walk.
