The Marian basilica stands at Kodmani near Mtskheta. A basilica is a long church without a dome, and the name Kodmani belongs to the whole district above the town.
The road from here runs to Shiomghvime, the cave monastery in the gorge above Mtskheta, and three more houses stand along the way: St George about three hundred metres off, St Demetrius of Thessaloniki six hundred, David the Builder seven hundred. Mtskheta itself, the ancient capital with Svetitskhoveli and Jvari, lies below.
For pilgrims this makes a convenient chain: the four houses of Kodmani are walked in a single outing, and the road leads on to Shiomghvime. The rules here are monastic: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, quiet, photography by permission.
