The house is dedicated to David the Builder, the king under whom Georgia was gathered into one state. Dedications to his name are uncommon, and they appear almost always where royal building is remembered.
It stands in the Kodmani district above Mtskheta, about seven hundred metres from the monastery of St Demetrius of Thessaloniki and a kilometre from the house of St George. The Marian basilica is seven hundred metres away as well, and the road along the gorge leads to the caves of Shiomghvime.
The rules are monastic: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, quiet, photography by permission. The houses of Kodmani stand close together and are easier to walk, leaving the car below where the climb begins.
