The Seyid mosque stands in Marneuli, about three hundred metres from the Imam Ali mosque. Seyids are descendants of the Prophet, and mosques of this name are usually linked to families tracing their origin to them.
Marneuli is the centre of the municipality of the same name, a town of more than twenty thousand people whose main ethnic group is Azerbaijani. It stands on the Algeti river about thirty kilometres south of Tbilisi, close to the borders with Azerbaijan and Armenia. The former name of the town was Borchalo, which also gave its name to the whole historical region.
During prayer it is better to postpone the visit and not to pass in front of worshippers. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
