The Imam Ali mosque stands in Marneuli and remains one of the principal Muslim places of the town. Its name refers to Ali ibn Abu Talib, cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet, held in special regard by Shia Muslims.
Marneuli is a town of many languages and confessions: Azerbaijani, Armenian and Georgian families live here, two town mosques are in use and an Orthodox church dedicated to David the Builder stands nearby. Another mosque, of Imam Hussein, is half a kilometre away.
The usual mosque etiquette applies: shoes are taken off at the entrance, clothing is modest, women cover their heads, and the hall is not entered during prayer. Prayer times are best checked on the spot.
