Short answer

Abastumani is a mountain climate resort in Samtskhe-Javakheti at about 1,300 metres, roughly 30 kilometres from Akhaltsikhe. It's known for pine forests, clean air and the Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory on Mount Kanobili, which offers tours. The village keeps 19th-century villas and a church from when the resort was popular with the Russian imperial family.

Why

  1. The observatory was founded in 1932 and is one of the region's oldest mountain observatories.
  2. On a clear night the stars are spectacular.
  3. Abastumani combines well with Akhaltsikhe, Rabati and Vardzia.

Details

Book observatory tours in advance; night viewing depends on the weather. Abastumani is about 4 hours from Tbilisi.

Tip

Bring warm clothes for night viewing at the observatory; mountain nights are cold even in summer.

What may differ
