Where is Bakuriani, and what is there to see?
A ski resort in winter and a mountain retreat in summer.
Short answer
Bakuriani is a mountain resort in Georgia at about 1,700 metres, 30 kilometres from Borjomi and around 3 hours from Tbilisi. In winter people ski on the Didveli and Kokhta slopes, and in summer they walk in conifer forests, go horse riding and visit the alpine botanical garden. The narrow-gauge Kukushka train runs from Borjomi to Bakuriani in about two and a half hours.
Why
- Bakuriani is considered a family resort with gentler slopes than Gudauri.
- The ski season usually runs from December to March.
- The Kukushka ride is popular in itself for the gorge views.
Details
Minibuses run from Tbilisi's Didube station to Bakuriani, and from Borjomi a minibus or taxi is easiest. In winter, book accommodation in advance for weekends and holidays.
Tip
On the Kukushka, sit by a window on the right in the direction of travel for the best gorge views.
What may differ
Mountain weather changes quickly, and some roads and trails are open only in summer.

Nabeghlavi or Borjomi: which is better?
Both are natural sodium bicarbonate waters, but Borjomi from the Borjomi gorge is noticeably saltier and more mineralised, while Nabeghlavi from Guria tastes milder, so people drink it more often day to day.
