Short answer

Vardzia is a 12th-century cave monastery carved into a cliff above the Kura river in Samtskhe-Javakheti, southern Georgia, under King Giorgi III and Queen Tamar. Hundreds of rooms are cut into the rock on several levels: cells, the Church of the Dormition with a fresco of Tamar, refectories and tunnels. It's about 4-4.5 hours from Tbilisi and 1.5 hours from Akhaltsikhe; entry is paid.

Why

  1. In the 13th century a strong earthquake brought down part of the cliff, exposing the rooms.
  2. Monks still live at Vardzia.
  3. There are many stairs and narrow passages inside, so wear comfortable shoes.

Details

Allow two days for Vardzia, with a night in Akhaltsikhe and a visit to Rabati fortress. Stop at Khertvisi fortress on the way.

Tip

Arrive at opening time before tour groups and heat, and bring a torch for the tunnels.

What may differ

It's hot with little shade in summer, so come in the morning or late afternoon.
