Queen Darejan's Palace in Tbilisi: how to get there and what to see?
An 18th-century palace with a balcony above the Kura.
Short answer
Queen Darejan's Palace, also called Sachino, was built in 1776 for the wife of King Erekle II in Old Tbilisi on a steep bank above the Kura. Its highlight is the carved wooden balcony overlooking the river and the Old Town. The building now belongs to an active convent, so entry isn't always possible, but it's easy to see from outside on an Old Town walk.
Why
- Darejan was the wife of King Erekle II, one of Georgia's most revered rulers.
- In 1795 the palace was damaged when Persian forces sacked Tbilisi.
- Metekhi Bridge and the Abanotubani district are nearby.
Details
If you want to enter the convent courtyard, follow the dress code and keep quiet. The best view of the balcony is from the opposite bank of the Kura.
Tip
The balcony is best photographed from the opposite bank of the Kura or from Metekhi Bridge.
