The Tsinandali estate: how to get there and what to see?
The Chavchavadze house museum, park and historic wine cellar.
Short answer
Tsinandali is the 19th-century estate of poet and prince Alexander Chavchavadze in Kakheti, about 10 kilometres from Telavi and an hour and a half to two hours from Tbilisi. See the house museum, the large landscaped park and the historic wine cellar with its collection, and try local wine at a tasting. Entry is paid, and a classical music festival is held here in summer.
Why
- Griboyedov and Lermontov visited, and Chavchavadze's daughter Nino married Griboyedov.
- Tsinandali was among the first in Georgia to make wine using European methods.
- A hotel operates by the estate if you want to stay.
Details
Combine Tsinandali with Telavi, Alaverdi and Gremi on one Kakheti trip. Allow 1.5-2 hours for the park and museum.
Tip
For the classical music festival, buy tickets early, as they sell out fast.
What may differ
Many museums close on Mondays and keep shorter hours in winter, so check before visiting.
