Uplistsikhe: how to get there and what to see?
A cave town near Gori, one of Georgia's oldest.
Short answer
Uplistsikhe is an ancient town carved into the rock above the Kura, about 10 kilometres from Gori and an hour to an hour and a half from Tbilisi. You can see cave halls, ancient pagan temples, streets and a 10th-century basilica at the top. The easiest way there is a taxi from Gori or a tour from Tbilisi; entry is paid.
Why
- A settlement existed here as early as the first millennium BC.
- Allow about 1.5-2 hours for the visit.
- The rocks are slippery, especially after rain, so wear sturdy shoes.
Details
In summer come in the morning, as there's no shade on the rocks. Uplistsikhe combines well with Gori and the Stalin Museum in one trip.
Tip
Bring a hat and water, as there's almost no shade on the rocks.
What may differ
It's hot with little shade in summer, so come in the morning or late afternoon.
