The Didgori Memorial: what is it, and how do you get there?
Giant swords marking the victory of 1121.
Short answer
The Didgori Memorial stands on the Didgori plateau west of Tbilisi, commemorating the battle of 1121 in which King David the Builder defeated the Seljuk army. Its centrepiece is a set of giant swords driven into the ground, and the plateau offers wide mountain views. It's about an hour by car on a mountain road, with no public transport.
Why
- The Battle of Didgori is considered one of the greatest victories in Georgian history.
- Commemorations are held here on 12 August, the battle's anniversary.
- Entry to the memorial is free.
Details
Go by car with a driver or by taxi, agreeing on waiting time. In bad weather the road to the plateau can be difficult, so bring warm clothes.
Tip
