Short answer

The Georgian Military Road is a historic route of about 200 kilometres across the Caucasus from Tbilisi to Vladikavkaz, built in its current form by the Russian Empire in the 19th century. It leads to Kazbegi and the Upper Lars border crossing, with main stops at the Zhinvali reservoir, Ananuri fortress, Gudauri, the Jvari Pass and the Friendship Monument viewpoint. You can drive it yourself, take a taxi or minibus to Stepantsminda, or join a tour.

  3. In winter the pass is temporarily closed due to snow and avalanches.
