When did Georgia leave the USSR and become independent?
9 April 1991, the referendum and two independence days.
Short answer
Georgia restored its independence on 9 April 1991, when the Supreme Council adopted the Act of Restoration of State Independence following the referendum of 31 March 1991. International recognition followed the collapse of the USSR at the end of 1991. The main independence holiday, however, is 26 May, marking the proclamation of the first republic in 1918.
Why
- 9 April was chosen in memory of 9 April 1989, when 21 people died as a rally in Tbilisi was dispersed.
- 9 April is National Unity Day in Georgia, a public holiday.
- The first Democratic Republic of Georgia existed from 1918 to 1921.
Details
The memorial to the victims of 9 April 1989 is on Rustaveli Avenue by the old parliament building. Celebrations and concerts are held in Tbilisi on 26 May.
