St. George Church in Zhibiani: 15th Century in Ushguli

The Church of St. George in Zhibiani is located in the northwestern region of Svaneti, in the village of Zhibiani (Mestia Municipality), home to the Ushguli community, one of the highest mountain settlements in Europe.

The church dates back to the 15th century and is a late medieval religious building. The architect of St. George's Church was inspired by the design and decor of the Lamari Church; you should see for yourself how well this turned out.

The church's shape resembles a triangular screen, which transitions into a projection ending in a semicircular apse. A carved arched window draws attention to the apse, allowing sunlight into the church. On the western side, there is also a carved window decorated with a relief cross on the upper frame.

The church walls, both inside and out, are covered with plaster, and the floor is covered with stone slabs. On the western side stands the only arched entrance to the church, its wooden door decorated with ornaments. Upon entering the hall, a view opens onto the altar and iconostasis, with an arched exit in the center.

On either side of the opening, in the recess, are miniature arch-shaped recesses for icons. The altar projection continues into the apse on all sides. The church's vault is divided into two parts by a projection and rests on arched arches, the bases of which end in pilasters.
