Catholic Church in Batumi: Holy Spirit Cathedral

We continue our coverage of Georgia's religious landmarks, specifically the city of Batumi. People of various nationalities and faiths coexist peacefully here, each with their own churches.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the first Catholic cathedral was built in Batumi, but it didn't function for long. During the Soviet era, churches ceased to function. After the end of World War II, religious buildings began to be returned to believers.

The former church was transferred to the Georgian Orthodox Church. It is now the cathedral of the Orthodox diocese.

The new Catholic church was built at the end of the 20th century; the design was prepared by architects O. Pataridze and G. Bagoshvili. Bishop D. Pasotto, Apostolic Administrator of the Caucasus, consecrated the church in 2000.

The church has a unique appearance. Modern technology is reflected in the LED sign above the entrance. A two-meter-tall silver-plated cross is installed on the roof, and large stained-glass windows adorn the building. The interior is rather modest.
