Pavnisi Church built in honor of St. George the Victorious is located in Kaspi municipality, Shida Kartli.
One of the important attractions of Georgia is the Church of Pavnisi built in honor of St. George. It is included in the list of national monuments of Georgia. For tourists here will be interesting frescoes of the 12th century...
The Church of St. George Favnisi is located literally in the heart of Georgia - in the region of Shida Kartli, in the village of Garikula (Kaspi municipality).
Architecture
The church was built in the Middle Ages, the IX-X centuries, a period of flourishing Georgian architecture. For travelers interested in discovering new facets of this sunny country, there is definitely something to see here.
The material for the construction of the church was chosen from what is in abundance in the flat area of the Shida Kartli region - sandstone, polished stone, tuff.
The building is rectangular, which in the Orthodox faith symbolizes salvation - as if representing Noah's Ark. The construction is supplemented by a semicircular apse in the east, arches with pilasters and unpretentious but laconic pilasters.
The west side of the church was reconstructed in the style of the original building and the material used for the reconstruction was concrete.
Inside the church, fragments of the altar and iconostasis with images of saints and martyrs remain, which receive light from a window carved in the stone wall of the apse. Light also comes in from the north and south sides. A simple stone cornice hangs over the facades. The vault of the roof is decorated with a tile that prevents the accumulation of water. The east façade has elements of the original decoration of a thousand years ago - relief tiles with the serpent encircled in a circle.
A miniature prayer room joins the Faunissi St. George's Church to the south.
Painting
The sights of Georgia stand out not only as architectural monuments, but also as living examples of medieval architecture, the walls of which are often decorated with hand stucco, frescoes and other forms of applied art. St. George's Church is no exception.
Fragments of paintings are preserved in the interior decoration of the church. The walls of the church are covered with a layer of decoration, which, presumably, was applied in the IX-X century, but the preservation of this painting leaves much to be desired. The remains of paintings are on the vault walls, the northern and southern walls. On the northern wall, it is difficult to understand the meaning of the image, as a major part of paintings was crumbled and only a few colored spots are left, and on the southern wall the figure of a man with a crown can be discerned.
The second layer of paintings survived better, it dates from the second half of the XIII century, there are already quite discernible religious themes, such as images of holy feasts, prayers, scenes from the life of St. George. Paintings also cover the prayer house. A line of ornaments runs along the bottom of the walls and the semicircular apses, as if enclosing the elements of the church.
When you visit St. George's Fawnisi Church, you can feel like a pioneer exploring not only the most beautiful places in Georgia, but also immersing yourself in its culture and unique atmosphere.
