The church was built in the 12th-13th centuries in the village of Timotesubani, Borjomi region, by Shalva Eristavt-Eristavi Akhaltsikheli, the owner of Tori. The central church, a major historical monument of Georgian culture, was consecrated in the name of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Architecture

Architecturally, the temple is simple. The structure, including the cross, is 28 meters high, 12 meters wide, and only 11 meters long. Pointed windows are located in the northern walls of the building. The dome is made of azure bricks.

Shalva Eristavt-Eristavi Akhaltsikheli decided to give Timotesubani a unique flair by painting it in a unique style. The temple's frescoes are considered among the most complex of their time and are unique. The monastery was decorated between 1205 and 1215, during the reign of Queen Tamar. Many of the frescoes have survived to this day.

To the north of the terrace stands a small, cozy single-nave basilica named after Saint Barbara. A little further east are the ruins of a stone tomb.
